About the Souls of Poor Folk

A little more than a century ago, W.E.B. DuBois authored the powerful and important book, The Souls of Black Folk. Inside this classic volume, DuBois brings his "gentle reader" "beneath the veil" that covered the realities of the black experience in early 20th century America.

Today we have compiled The Souls of Poor Folk, a multimedia initiative which invites readers, listeners, and viewers to journey beneath the veil that hangs over the face of our nation (and indeed the entire world) and hides the scars and blemishes of poverty and homelessness.

Here, scholars, social service providers, and social commentators speak, teach, and question through their essays. Artists from a variety of musical genres challenge and illuminate through their songs. Candid interviews and powerful footage captured on film, together with the entire project, examine what is happening and what needs to be happening in order for real change to occur.

The Souls of Poor Folk is a joint effort by Greater Love Movement and Peace of Music that will engage listeners, viewers, and readers with thoughtful and challenging perspectives on the various aspects of poverty and homelessness in America. These messages are reaching audiences via the following vehicles: an original music compilation (CD), an original film documentary (DVD), a published collection of original essays, an interactive website, and a series of events featuring aforementioned materials. Through this coordinated effort, artists, scholars, social service providers, and other concerned citizens are reaching a large portion of our society and encouraging them to live their lives with care, concern, and remembrance of those who are far too often forgotten.
